Study Smart: Managing Neck and Shoulder Tension During Exam Season

Long hours hunched over books and laptops aren't kind to a young spine. Small changes that protect students through exam season.

Study Smart: Managing Neck and Shoulder Tension During Exam Season

Exam season demands long hours at your desk or studying from your bed, often leading to hunched shoulders, craned necks and overall tension in your upper body. Poor posture can strain muscles in your neck and shoulders, leaving you stiff and uncomfortable during this stressful time.

Optimise your workspace. Use a chair that supports your back, keep your screen at eye level and sit with both feet flat on the floor to reduce strain on your neck and shoulders.

Take regular breaks. Set a timer to stand up, stretch and walk around every 30–45 minutes. Simple shoulder rolls and neck stretches can keep muscles from tightening up.

Stay hydrated and breathe. Drink water throughout your study session and practise deep breathing to help reduce tension and maintain focus.

Change position frequently. Alternate between sitting and standing if you can, or shift your position to avoid staying in one posture for hours.

Build in relaxation. Incorporate short breaks for gentle exercise, yoga or meditation. Mental relaxation can help ease physical tension.

How osteopathy may help. Osteopathy focuses on the body's structure and function and may help relieve neck and shoulder tension by using gentle manual techniques and providing advice on posture and exercises. While osteopathy doesn't treat exam-related stress itself, it can support your musculoskeletal health and improve mobility so you feel more comfortable during study sessions.

If you're experiencing persistent neck or shoulder pain during exams, our Kettering clinic provides gentle osteopathic care for students in Kettering, Corby and the surrounding areas.
