What Is Osteopathy?

A plain-English explanation of osteopathy, what happens at an appointment and when another healthcare route may be more appropriate.

Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession in the UK focused primarily on the musculoskeletal system — muscles, joints and the way the body moves.

What happens at an appointment

At Taylor Osteopathy, an appointment starts with a conversation about the problem, medical history and what the symptoms are stopping you from doing. Examination may include movement, joint and muscle assessment and, where relevant, a neurological screen.

What treatment may include

If osteopathic care appears appropriate, treatment may include mobilisation, soft-tissue techniques and other hands-on approaches, alongside advice about movement, exercise and everyday activity.

When osteopathy is not the right route

Osteopathy is not the right answer to every symptom. If the history or examination suggests that osteopathic care is not the right option, or that you need medical investigation or input from another healthcare professional, Neil will explain that clearly and help point you towards the appropriate next step.

Who you will see

You do not need a GP referral to book. Neil Taylor is the founder and sole osteopath at Taylor Osteopathy, qualified with a Bachelor of Osteopathy from Oxford Brookes University in 2014 and is registered with the General Osteopathic Council, registration 8946.

The aim

The aim is straightforward: understand what is going on as well as possible, use hands-on care where appropriate, and give you a practical plan rather than an endless course of treatment.
